Yesterday the health board discussed my ballot initiative which would allow East Longmeadow residents to elect health board members. The town council will hear my proposal on May 10 at 6pm. To clarify, only East Longmeadow and Palmer have their health board members picked by an unelected town manager. Every other city and town in Hampden County has either a direct or indirect say in health board membership. Some municipalities directly elect their board members. See M.G.L. c. 41, section 1. Others elect a mayor who then appoints the board. See M.G.L. c. 111, s. 26.

For a breakdown of how cities and towns across Hampden County elect/appoint health board members, read my post Reason #1 to Reform the E.L. Health Board: Voters’ Rights.
