Speaking to a judge? Here’s my #1 tip. Tell him exactly what you want. The first thing out of your month–after the obligatory “good morning, your Honor”–should be a clear statement of what you want the judge to do, e.g., allow your motion, dismiss the opposition’s pleadings, continue your hearing to a specific date, etc. Begin with what you want. Make your argument. Then end by repeating what you want.
