Two members of the Chicopee City Council have proposed banning the sale of nips in an effort to reduce litter and increase road safety.
While no other cities or towns in western Massachusetts have such a ban, several communities on the eastern side of the state have enacted ordinances banning 50-milliliter alcohol bottles.Β Those municipalities include Newton, Mashpee, Chelsea, and Marthaβs Vineyard.
Probably the most rational solution to the problem, a 5-cent deposit on the small bottles, was rejected by the state legislature two years ago.
When speaking with Masslive, Councilor Robert Zygarowski stated the obvious when he
Aired the concern that even if Chicopee bans the bottles, people will buy them in surrounding communities and still will throw them from car windows.
