Andrew Chieu, 63, was arraigned yesterday in Quincy District Court for allegedly placing a caged raccoon over a fire burning in a trash can.

According to Boston.com, the incident took place in Chieu’s backyard on Royal Street in Quincy. 

When police arrived at the scene, they encountered Chieu arguing with his neighbor and the injured animal inside a cage. Chieu was arrested and the raccoon was transported to a local animal hospital for treatment. The severity of the burns are unknown. 

Surveillance video may have captured the events.

Chieu was arraigned yesterday on one court of animal cruelty (M.G.L. c. 272, Section 77) and released on his own recognizance. His next hearing (most likely a pretrial hearing) is scheduled for February 15, 2024.

If convicted, Chieu could be sentenced up to 10 years in state prison.

Update – 1/19/2024: According to a report today on boston.com, the racoon died while in the custody of New England Wildlife Center.
