Former Stoneham detective Robert Kennedy, 54, has been sentenced to 90 days of home confinement and two years of probation for defrauding three eastern Massachusetts landlords. Additionally, he was ordered to pay $14,275 in restitution to his victims.

Kennedy–who made $187,000 as a local police officer–gave a bogus social security number to the landlords he rented from between 2020 and 2023. The number belonged to one of Kennedy’s relatives who shared the same name but had a higher credit score.

Once approved and placed in an apartment, then-detective Kennedy paid his landlords using bad checks. He took advantage of the slow eviction process to live rent-free for a long as he could.

Ultimately he was charged and pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud.

According to a press release published today by the U.S. District Attorney’s Office in Boston,

This case…highlights the FBI’s ongoing commitment to root out and bring to justice anyone who deliberately compromises the integrity of their position for personal gain.
