A mechanic’s lien allows a contractor to collect the money he is owed for labor and materials used to improve a home. The first step in the lien process is the recording of a “notice of contract” at the registry of deeds. The notice must then be served on the homeowner by the sheriff’s department. If payment isn’t made, the contractor will need to file a lawsuit to enforce the lien, sell the house, and recover what he is owed.
