Thereās a moment in almost every criminal hearing when the judge takes a good, hard look at the defendant. The judge is, without a doubt, using what he sees to form an opinion about the accused.
In this critical moment, itās clearly best for the defendant to appear respectful and concerned.Ā Thatās hard to do when you appear for your hearing in pajamas.
Instead, defendants should attend court wearing attire that shows they care about the proceedings and their future.Ā Men cannot go wrong wearing a suit.Ā But even just putting on a tie could be enough to tip the scale in your favor. Ā
As a defense attorney, I certainly have more confidence speaking on my client’s behalf when he’s respectably dressed standing beside me. And I can assure you that it does not go unnoticed by the judge when the defendant is well garbed.
Donāt get me wrong. If youāve commented a serious offense or if your criminal record is atrocious, the simple act of donning a sport coat isnāt going to save you.
But in all other cases, wearing a suit or a necktie to your court hear can do nothing but help your situation.
