In December 2023 police arrested Elijah Melton, 26, of Middleborough, for allegedly possessing and intending to distribute a large amount of fentanyl.
He has been held in federal custody while the case is pending.
Investigators claim that Elijah attempted to hire a fellow inmate, who was close to being released, to murder one of the government’s witnesses prior to his trial. Elijah allegedly offered the inmate $75,000 to do the job.
Additionally, law enforcement claims that Elijah asked the same inmate to murder two federal prosecutors in exchange for a cash payment.
The inmate reported the alleged solicitations to the authorities.
The U.S. District Attorney’s Office in Boston announced today that Elijah will be charged with one count of conspiring to commit murder for hire. If convicted, he can get up to 10 years in state prison.
