Here in Massachusetts police officers are certified by POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission.)

POST has the authority to investigate police misconduct that involves

  • discrimination,
  • excessive force,
  • serious injury or death
  • improper use of a weapon
  • unprofessionalism.

To file a complaint, use the form on POST’s website.

When filing a complaint, be sure to upload whatever evidence you have that might substantiate your claims. This may include videos of the alleged misconduct, photos of any injuries you’ve sustained, police reports, etc.

If you’re filing a complaint against an officer who arrest you, the officer’s department, name and badge/id number will be on the police report. You’ll need that information for the complaint.

POST has the power to decertify or suspend an officer. The agency also has the authority to order remedial training for officers when necessary.
