Last month William Haney, 42, of Boston was arrested and charged with murder after he allegedly ran over John Axelrod, a prominent art collector and philanthropist.
The alleged incident took place in broad daylight as Axelrod walked his dog at the Commonwealth Avenue Mall.
On the day of his arraignment (January 5, 2026) a judge at Boston Municipal Court ordered Haney to undergo a competency evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital.
The evaluation found that Haney is currently not competent to stand trial.
Based on these findings, a judge today ordered Haney to return to Bridgewater State Hospital.
According to the online docket, there will be another competency hearing (pursuant to M.G.L. c. 123, Sec. 16) to determine whether further hospitalization is necessary.
