State Representative Orlando Ramos of Springfield has presented a bill entitled An Act relative to traffic safety at intersections (H.4087).

The proposed law would allow municipalities to use “safety cameras” to fine drivers who violate traffic laws at intersections controlled by traffic lights.

The bill lists three types of punishable “intersection violations”:

  1. making a turn at a steady red indication or stop indication in a traffic control signal;
  2. failing to yield, slow or stop at a steady red indication or stop indication in a traffic control signal at an intersection; or
  3. blocking an intersection.

Municipalities that chose to use safety cameras would be required to notify the public of their use by posting signs at each monitored intersection.
