Anyone selling a house in Massachusetts needs the fire department to inspect and approve the property’s smoke detectors prior to the closing.
The inspection is required by M.G.L. c. 148, section 26F which states:
All buildings or structures occupied in whole or in part for residential purposes…shall, upon the sale or transfer of such building or structure, be equipped by the seller with approved smoke detectors…
The inspection costs about $50 and usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. It should be scheduled at least a week or two before your closing.
