This week the Wall Street Journal published an article on the rapidly increasing cost of top-rated lawyers in the U.S.
The article cites a number of eye-popping statistics from Wells Fargo and other corporations that monitor the legal profession. Here are just some of the data:
- The hourly rate for lawyers rose 8.3% in 2023 and 9% in the first half of 2024. Historically, legal billing rises just 4% per year.
- America’s top 50 law firms jacked up their fees by a staggering 10% in 2024.
- The top 51 to 100 firms increased their hourly billing rate by 7%.
- Law firm revenues rose 11.4% in the first part of 2024.
- Lawyers at elite firms billed, on average, between $500 and $1,300 per hour in 2023.
- Even junior associates at top firms have seen a drastic spike in their yearly salaries, In 2018 the average associate made about $190,000. Today they are earning around $250,000 annually, a pay increase of approximately 30%.
The article notes that many clients are starting to rebel against the burgeoning legal bills. Many are turning to in-house counsel to handle more legal matters. Other clients are shopping around for more reasonably priced legal services and avoiding retaining counsel unless it’s truly necessary.
